Congress faces resignations amid sexual misconduct allegations
After separate allegations of sexual misconduct, two members of Congress are resigning. Democrat Eric Swalwell faces multiple allegations of sexual assault, which he denies. He dropped out of the California governor's race this weekend before stepping down from his congressional seat this afternoon. Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales' resignation takes effect tonight after he admitted to sleeping with a staffer who later took her own life.
The allegations against Swalwell include a graphic account from Lonna Drewes, who claims she was raped and choked by him in a hotel room. Swalwell's attorney has stated that he unequivocally denies all allegations. Drewes' attorney mentioned that more women have contacted them, making her the fifth woman to come forward publicly. Swalwell's political career appears to be over, and he may face criminal charges as Drewes and her attorney have presented evidence to the police.
With these resignations, the balance of power in the House is shifting. Following the departures, the House will consist of 216 Republicans and 213 Democrats, with one independent who generally votes with Republicans. This gives Republicans a two-vote margin, allowing them to pass legislation without needing Democratic support.
Additionally, the House Ethics Committee is investigating other members, including Florida Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick for alleged fraud involving COVID funds, and Cory Mills for various misconduct allegations. The Ethics Committee is expected to issue a punishment recommendation for Cherfilus-McCormick soon, which could lead to her expulsion.
Amid these developments, concerns about the culture on Capitol Hill are being raised. Congressman Andy Kim noted, "Whatever we are doing when it comes to misconduct on Capitol Hill, it's not working." This highlights the urgent need for reform in how misconduct is addressed within Congress.
