D4vd charged with murder of missing teenage girl Celeste Rivas Hernandez
US musician D4vd, legally named David Anthony Burke, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The Los Angeles district attorney stated that Burke is accused of murdering Rivas Hernandez, whose decomposed remains were discovered in September in a Tesla registered to his Texas address. Burke, 21, faces additional charges for murder for "financial gain" and for murdering a witness to an investigation, as announced by Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.
During a press conference, Hochman detailed that Rivas Hernandez went to Burke's residence in the Hollywood Hills on April 23, 2025, and was never heard from again. Her remains were found on September 8, 2025, in the front trunk of the Tesla. Hochman emphasized that Burke allegedly killed Rivas Hernandez to protect his lucrative music career, which she was threatening on that night. The charges also include numerous sexual acts with a minor and body mutilation, with the possibility of the death penalty being sought by the DA's office.
Burke remains in custody without bail following his arrest last week. His attorneys have stated that "actual evidence in this case will show that David Burke did not murder Celeste Rivas Hernandez and he was not the cause of her death." The Los Angeles Police Department Chief, Jim McDonnell, addressed criticism regarding the investigation's timeline, asserting that the priority was to secure justice for Rivas Hernandez and her family. The investigation faced challenges due to the condition of the remains and the need to gather comprehensive evidence.
Power Read: The charges against D4vd significantly shift the power dynamics in the entertainment industry, particularly for emerging artists. With a high-profile case involving serious allegations, the scrutiny on Burke's career could deter potential collaborators and sponsors, impacting his future in the music scene. Conversely, the prosecution gains leverage as they navigate a case that could attract national attention, potentially leading to a precedent in how similar cases are handled in the future.
What to watch: D4vd's arraignment is scheduled for Monday in downtown Los Angeles, which will be a critical moment in the unfolding of this case.
