DC faces highest unemployment rate amid federal job cuts
Washington DC's unemployment rate has surged to 6.7%, the highest in the country, as over 300,000 federal jobs were eliminated since 2024. Alicia Contreras, a former USAID deputy country representative, returned to the area last September only to find herself struggling to secure employment despite her extensive qualifications. "The job market is pretty bad here... I feel like it’s saturated," she stated after submitting nearly 100 applications with no success.
The job market in DC has been significantly affected by federal cuts, with job postings down 30% compared to pre-COVID levels, according to Laura Ullrich, director of economic research at Indeed. "In DC, there’s a pretty broad group of sectors" impacted, she noted. This downturn in federal employment has also led to a ripple effect in the private sector, with many businesses struggling to recover from pandemic losses.
Felipe Mendy, an Argentinian veterinarian, shared his experience of being unable to find a job for two years, stating, "I’ve been told ‘you’re overqualified’ many times." Many highly qualified individuals are now taking lower-level positions or facing salary cuts. The high cost of living in DC, where average rent for a two-bedroom apartment is $3,100, exacerbates the situation for job seekers.
As the job market remains bleak, Contreras is taking action by running for the Maryland House of Delegates, aiming to address the issues stemming from the erosion of federal institutions. "I need to fight back," she said, highlighting the urgency of the situation for many in the region.
The economic landscape in Washington DC is increasingly precarious, with 123 private companies announcing job cuts affecting over 13,000 workers, the highest since the pandemic. José Andrés, a local restaurateur, noted the instability in the economy and the impact on his businesses, stating, "What we need is stability."
What to watch: The upcoming Maryland House of Delegates elections, where candidates like Contreras aim to influence policy in response to the job crisis.
