Egyptian family returned to ICE custody after brief release
An Egyptian family of six has been taken back into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody just days after their release from a Texas detention facility, according to their attorney Eric Lee. Hayam El Gamal and her five children were reportedly on a private jet in Denver bound for Egypt due to a court order violation. "This is a very live situation – an absolutely brazen violation of separation of powers," Lee stated.
The El Gamal family had been held for 10 months at the Dilley detention center, which has faced criticism for inadequate care and food for families. Their case has gained national attention, particularly as their detention period is believed to be the longest for any family during Donald Trump’s second administration. Hayam El Gamal was arrested in June 2025 in connection with her husband, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, who is facing charges for allegedly throwing molotov cocktails at a crowd advocating for hostages in Gaza, which includes a federal hate crime charge.
Power Read: The swift re-arrest of the El Gamal family underscores the ongoing tensions within U.S. immigration enforcement and the judicial system. The family's brief release and subsequent return to custody highlight the complexities and potential overreach of ICE, raising questions about the balance of power between immigration authorities and the courts. This situation may embolden ICE's position in enforcing immigration laws, while simultaneously exposing vulnerabilities in the judicial process that can lead to rapid reversals of decisions.
What to watch: The upcoming court proceedings regarding the El Gamal family's case will be critical in determining their future and could set precedents for similar immigration cases.
