Elaine Luria seeks House comeback amid shifting political winds
Elaine Luria, a former member of the January 6 committee, is campaigning for a return to the House of Representatives, stating, "the wind is on our back" as Democrats aim to regain control in the upcoming midterm elections. Luria lost her seat to Republican Jennifer Kiggans in 2022 but is now confident due to what she describes as a "grave concern" among voters regarding Donald Trump's presidency, particularly his federal budget cuts and foreign policy decisions that have impacted the economy.
In a recent interview, Luria highlighted that only 37% of Americans approve of Trump's performance, citing this as an opportunity to challenge Kiggans, whom she labeled a "rubber stamp" for Trump. Virginia's second congressional district is viewed as highly competitive, and Luria's previous experience on the January 6 committee positions her uniquely against Trump’s influence.
Luria has secured key endorsements from Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger and Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, raising over $1.75 million in the first quarter of 2026. She currently holds more than $2.3 million in cash on hand. Additionally, Virginia voters may adopt new congressional maps that could favor Democrats in the midterms, further bolstering Luria's campaign.
Luria's focus includes addressing federal budget cuts affecting military families in her district and advocating for a balanced approach to U.S. support for Israel amid its conflict with Iran. She believes that her campaign, along with those of other Democratic candidates, can effectively challenge the current administration's policies. "I think that we’re going to have the resources, the momentum and the support from the voters to flip [control of] the House," Luria stated, emphasizing the importance of providing a check on Trump’s administration.
What to watch: Virginia voters will decide on new congressional maps, which could significantly impact Luria's chances in the November midterms.
