Musk testifies against OpenAI, claims betrayal of charitable mission
Elon Musk testified this week at a trial concerning OpenAI, asserting that cofounder Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman betrayed both him and the public by transforming the organization from a nonprofit into a profit-driven entity. Musk stated, "If we make it OK to loot a charity, the entire foundation of charitable giving in America will be destroyed. That’s my concern." He is seeking $150 billion in damages from OpenAI and Microsoft, one of its largest investors, with proceeds intended for OpenAI’s charitable arm.
Musk's lawyer, Steven Molo, argued that it was the OpenAI defendants who were greedy, as they began attracting investors like Microsoft. In contrast, OpenAI's lawyer, Bill Savitt, claimed Musk initially supported the shift to a for-profit model, stating, "He wanted 'the keys to the kingdom' and sued only after he failed." The trial could complicate OpenAI’s plans for a potential IPO and raise broader concerns about AI technology, as Musk has expressed significant worries about AI safety.
The trial also highlights the shifting dynamics within the AI sector, with Musk's xAI currently trailing OpenAI in usage. The outcome may affect the leadership structure of OpenAI, with Musk calling for Altman and Brockman to be removed from their positions. Additionally, Musk's social media activity has drawn scrutiny, prompting U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers to caution him against making public statements that could influence the trial.
What to watch: The trial's developments could impact OpenAI's leadership and its potential IPO plans.
