Trump predicts Strait of Hormuz reopening amid US-Iran talks
US President Donald Trump announced that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen "fairly soon" as tensions with Iran continue. Speaking to reporters, Trump emphasized that the US would not accept Iran's plans to impose a toll booth system in the critical waterway. He stated, "It won’t be easy... We will have that open fairly soon."
Despite a recent two-week ceasefire, shipping in the strait remains severely disrupted, with only two vessels passing through on a recent Friday, down from five the previous day. More than 600 vessels, including 325 tankers, are currently stranded due to the blockade, which has affected approximately one-fifth of global oil and natural gas flows. Trump reiterated that ensuring Iran does not possess nuclear weapons is a priority in any agreement, asserting that the strait would open "automatically" if this condition is met.
US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf are scheduled to lead negotiations in Islamabad this Saturday. However, conflicting messages from both sides regarding the terms of the negotiations, including a 10-point plan proposed by Tehran, indicate ongoing complexities in reaching a resolution.
