US and Iran agree to two-week ceasefire amid tensions
The United States and Iran have reached a conditional two-week ceasefire, effective immediately, during which shipping traffic will be permitted through the Strait of Hormuz. This agreement follows more than a month of coordinated attacks by the US and Israel on Iran. US President Donald Trump stated that he agreed to "suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks" if Iran reopens the vital shipping route. In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that the US had already met its military objectives.
Iran has consented to allow vessels through the Strait under the coordination of its military. Additionally, Iran has proposed a 10-point plan that includes a complete cessation of war in multiple regions, a commitment to lifting sanctions, and the release of Iranian funds frozen by the US. Tehran's Supreme National Security Council emphasized that Iran's political victories would be solidified through negotiations.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has been mediating the discussions, confirmed the ceasefire's immediate effectiveness. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed support for the ceasefire contingent on Iran's compliance, stating that it does not include operations in Lebanon, where Israeli troops are engaged against Hezbollah. Following Trump's announcement, sirens sounded in Israel as the Israel Defense Forces reported intercepting missiles launched from Iran.
The ceasefire's implications are complex, as both nations appear to have differing interpretations of its terms. Negotiations are set to continue in Islamabad, but the path to a conclusive agreement remains fraught with challenges, given the history of escalating tensions during previous talks.
